Clear the room of all furniture and items
Wear gloves, long sleeves, knee pads, and safety glasses
Turn off HVAC vents in the room if possible
Locate the carpet edge at a wall, doorway, or transition strip
Use pliers and a utility knife to cut the carpet into manageable strips
Pull up the carpet starting at one edge
Roll each strip tightly as you remove it
Remove carpet padding after the carpet is lifted
Pull up any staples, tack strips, and nails with pliers or a pry bar
Cut carpet around fixed obstacles as needed
Bag and dispose of carpet, padding, and debris according to local rules
Sweep and vacuum the subfloor after removal
Inspect the subfloor for damage before installing new flooring
