Gently squeeze the avocado in your palm
It should yield slightly to pressure without feeling mushy
Check the skin color; many ripe avocados darken as they ripen
Remove the small stem cap; if it comes off easily and the color underneath is green, it is likely ripe
If the stem area is brown, the avocado may be overripe
If it feels very firm, it needs more time to ripen
If it feels very soft or has sunken spots, it is likely overripe
For Hass avocados, a darker, nearly black skin often indicates ripeness
Avoid squeezing with your fingertips to prevent bruising
Check for a slight give near the top end of the fruit
