Check the expiration or sell-by date
Look for cracks, leaks, or unusual odors
Place the egg in a bowl of water
If it sinks and lies flat, it is fresh
If it sinks but stands upright, it is older but may still be usable
If it floats, discard it
Crack it into a separate bowl before using
If the white or yolk looks unusual, discard it
If it smells bad, discard it
If the shell feels slimy or powdery, discard it
