Check the expiration or sell-by date

If it sinks and lies flat, it is fresh
If it sinks but stands upright, it is older but may still be usable
If it floats, discard it
Crack the egg into a separate bowl
If the yolk or white looks unusual, discard it
If it smells bad, discard it
Check for cracks or leaks in the shell
If the shell feels slimy or powdery, discard it
