How To Test A Capacitor With A Multimeter?

Turn off power and discharge the capacitor completely

Remove the capacitor from the circuit if possible

Set the multimeter to capacitance mode if available

Connect the probes to the capacitor terminals

Read the capacitance value on the display

Compare the reading to the capacitor’s rated value

If your multimeter does not have capacitance mode, set it to resistance mode

Touch the probes to the capacitor terminals

Watch for the resistance reading to start low and then rise

Reverse the probes and repeat the test

If the reading stays at zero, the capacitor may be shorted

If the reading stays at infinite resistance, the capacitor may be open

If the reading does not change at all, the capacitor may be faulty
