Turn off power and discharge the capacitor completely
Remove the capacitor from the circuit if possible
Set the multimeter to capacitance mode if available
Connect the probes to the capacitor terminals
Read the capacitance value on the display
Compare the reading to the capacitor’s rated value
If your multimeter does not have capacitance mode, set it to resistance mode
Touch the probes to the capacitor terminals
Watch for the resistance reading to start low and then rise
Reverse the probes and repeat the test
If the reading stays at zero, the capacitor may be shorted
If the reading stays at infinite resistance, the capacitor may be open
If the reading does not change at all, the capacitor may be faulty
