Check the expiration or sell-by date
Place the egg in a bowl of water
If it sinks and lies flat, it is good
If it sinks but stands upright, it is still usable but older
If it floats, discard it
Crack the egg into a separate bowl
If the yolk and white look normal, it is good
If it smells bad, discard it
If the egg white is unusually cloudy, pink, green, or slimy, discard it
