Check your state’s title transfer and gift requirements
Gather the current title, valid ID, and any required transfer forms
Complete the seller and buyer sections on the title
Include the odometer reading if required
Sign the title exactly as required by your state
Have the family member sign the title if required
Complete a bill of sale if your state requires one
Complete a gift affidavit if the vehicle is being gifted
Remove the license plates if your state requires it
Provide a lien release if there is an active lien
Submit the title transfer paperwork to the DMV or motor vehicle agency
Pay any required title transfer, registration, or tax fees
Update the registration and insurance in the family member’s name
Keep copies of all completed documents
