Keep the sore clean and avoid irritating it

Avoid spicy, acidic, salty, or rough foods
Eat soft, cool foods and drink plenty of fluids
Use over-the-counter pain relief if approved by your doctor
Apply prescribed mouth gels or topical numbing agents as directed
Ask your doctor about medicated mouth rinses
Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and mouthwashes with alcohol
Maintain good oral hygiene
Contact your cancer care team if the sore is severe, infected, or not healing
Seek urgent care if you have fever, trouble swallowing, or signs of dehydration
