Stop the triggering antibiotic if possible
Use oral vancomycin for nonsevere or severe initial infection
Use fidaxomicin as an alternative first-line treatment
Use oral vancomycin taper or pulse therapy for recurrences
Use fidaxomicin for recurrent infection
Use bezlotoxumab to reduce recurrence risk in selected patients
Use fecal microbiota transplantation for multiple recurrences
Use metronidazole only when preferred agents are unavailable and disease is nonsevere
Provide supportive care with fluids and electrolyte replacement
Avoid antidiarrheal medications unless directed by a clinician
Isolate the patient with contact precautions
Wash hands with soap and water
Clean surfaces with sporicidal disinfectants
Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, dehydration, fever, or blood in stool
