Wash the area gently with mild soap and lukewarm water
Pat the skin completely dry; do not rub
Keep the area dry and cool
Wear loose, breathable underwear and clothing
Change out of sweaty clothes as soon as possible
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or zinc oxide to reduce friction
Use an anti-chafing balm or powder if needed
Avoid further friction from exercise until the skin heals
Take breaks and keep the area dry during activity
Use a clean, soft cloth or gauze to separate skin folds if needed
Avoid scented products, harsh soaps, and alcohol-based products
Do not shave the area until it heals
Use over-the-counter hydrocortisone only if the skin is not broken and for a short time
Use an antifungal cream if the rash is itchy, red, and persistent
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, fever, spreading redness, or no improvement in a few days
