Rest the affected foot and avoid putting weight on it
Elevate the foot above heart level when possible
Apply ice packs for 15–20 minutes at a time several times a day
Drink plenty of water
Take an NSAID such as ibuprofen or naproxen if safe for you
Take colchicine if prescribed
Take corticosteroids if prescribed
Continue any prescribed urate-lowering medicine unless your doctor tells you to stop
Avoid alcohol, especially beer and spirits
Avoid high-purine foods such as red meat, organ meats, shellfish, and anchovies
Limit sugary drinks and foods high in fructose
Eat low-fat dairy, vegetables, and whole grains
Maintain a healthy weight
Wear loose, comfortable shoes
See a doctor promptly for severe pain, fever, redness spreading, or first-time symptoms
Get medical follow-up for long-term gout prevention and uric acid control
