Call a pediatrician promptly for any baby with suspected RSV
Use supportive care only unless a doctor prescribes otherwise
Keep the baby hydrated with frequent breastfeeds, formula feeds, or oral fluids if age-appropriate
Use saline nose drops and gentle suction to clear mucus
Use a cool-mist humidifier to help ease breathing
Keep the baby upright when awake to help breathing
Monitor breathing closely for fast breathing, wheezing, grunting, or chest retractions
Monitor for dehydration, including fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, or no tears
Give fever medicine only if advised by a pediatrician and dosed by weight
Avoid smoke, strong odors, and sick contacts
Wash hands often and clean shared surfaces
Seek urgent medical care if the baby has trouble breathing, blue lips, pauses in breathing, poor feeding, extreme sleepiness, or signs of dehydration
Go to the emergency room immediately for any apnea, severe breathing difficulty, or color change
Follow hospital treatment if needed, which may include oxygen, suctioning, or IV fluids
Do not give over-the-counter cough or cold medicines to babies unless specifically instructed by a doctor
