How To Treat Second Degree Burns?

Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes

Remove rings, watches, belts, and tight clothing near the burn

Do not use ice, butter, oils, or toothpaste

Cover the burn with a clean, non-stick sterile dressing or cling film

Keep the area clean and dry

Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen

Do not pop blisters

Elevate the burned area if possible

Watch for signs of infection, such as increasing redness, swelling, pus, or fever

Seek medical care if the burn is large, deep, on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over a major joint

Seek urgent care if there is severe pain, trouble breathing, or signs of shock
