How To Update A Computer BIOS?

Identify the exact computer model and current BIOS/UEFI version

Download the latest BIOS/UEFI update from the device manufacturer’s support/download page

Read the update instructions and confirm the correct BIOS file/format for your system

Prepare a reliable power source (use AC power; avoid battery-only operation)

Disable sleep/hibernation and suspend any automatic updates that could interrupt the process

Back up current BIOS settings if the firmware utility supports it

Back up important data on the drive (for safety)

Choose the update method recommended by the manufacturer:

Use the manufacturer’s BIOS update utility in Windows (if supported)

Use BIOS/UEFI “Update” or “EZ Flash/Q-Flash/M-Flash” from within firmware setup

Use a removable USB drive with the correct firmware file (if supported)

If using a USB method:

Format the USB drive per manufacturer guidance

Copy the BIOS update file(s) exactly as specified

If using a Windows utility:

Run the updater as instructed and do not interrupt the process

If using the BIOS/UEFI menu method:

Reboot and enter BIOS/UEFI setup

Locate the firmware update option and select the update file from the USB drive (if applicable)

Start the update and do not reboot, power off, or close the updater

Wait for the update to complete and for the system to reboot automatically (if supported)

After reboot, enter BIOS/UEFI setup to verify:

BIOS/UEFI version updated correctly

Boot order and required settings are still correct

Save changes and exit BIOS/UEFI setup if prompted

If the update fails or the system becomes unresponsive:

Use the manufacturer’s recovery method (e.g., BIOS flashback/dual BIOS) exactly as documented

Do not attempt repeated updates unless the manufacturer recovery steps indicate it
