How To Use A Multimeter Tutorial?

Set the multimeter to the correct measurement type: voltage, current, resistance, continuity, or diode

Choose AC or DC mode when measuring voltage or current

Plug the black probe into COM

Plug the red probe into the correct jack for the measurement

Start with the highest range if the meter is not auto-ranging

Touch the probes to the circuit or component terminals

Read the value on the display

For voltage, place probes in parallel with the source or component

For current, open the circuit and place the meter in series

For resistance, disconnect power from the circuit before measuring

For continuity, check for a beep or low resistance reading

For diode testing, place the probes across the diode and note the forward voltage drop

Keep fingers behind the probe guards

Never measure voltage with the meter set to current or resistance

Never measure current directly across a power source

Turn off the meter after use

Remove the probes and store the multimeter safely
