Set the multimeter to the correct voltage setting
Choose AC voltage for outlets and appliances
Choose DC voltage for batteries and electronics
Plug the black probe into the COM port
Plug the red probe into the V port
Turn the circuit or device on if needed
Touch the black probe to the negative or ground point
Touch the red probe to the positive point
Read the voltage value on the display
Keep your fingers on the insulated parts of the probes
Use a higher voltage range if the reading is unknown
Remove the probes after taking the reading
Turn the multimeter off when finished
