Identify the correct tap and die size for the thread you need
Secure the workpiece firmly in a vise or clamp
Mark the hole center or rod end if needed
Drill the hole to the proper tap drill size for tapping
Chamfer the hole edge slightly to help the tap start
Apply cutting oil to the tap, die, and workpiece
Insert the tap straight into the drilled hole
Turn the tap slowly clockwise to cut threads
Back the tap off periodically to break chips
Continue until the tap reaches the desired depth
Remove the tap and clean out chips from the hole
For external threads, secure the rod or bolt in a vise
Chamfer the rod end slightly before threading
Place the die into the die stock if required
Align the die squarely with the rod end
Turn the die clockwise while applying steady pressure
Back the die off occasionally to clear chips
Continue threading to the required length
Remove the die and clean the threads
Test the threads with the matching bolt or nut
Clean and oil the tools after use
