Hold the cane on the side opposite your weaker or injured leg
Stand upright with your shoulders relaxed
Place the cane slightly ahead of you when you step
Move the cane and your weaker leg forward together
Step through with your stronger leg
Keep the cane tip flat on the ground
Make sure the cane height lets your elbow bend slightly
Wear non-slip shoes
Use the cane on stable, even surfaces when possible
Take small, steady steps
Use handrails on stairs if available
Go up stairs with your stronger leg first
Go down stairs with your weaker leg and cane first
Check the cane tip regularly for wear
Keep the cane within easy reach when not walking
