Adjust the crutches so the top pad sits about 1 to 2 inches below your armpits
Keep the handgrips at wrist height when your arms are relaxed at your sides
Hold both crutches on the side opposite your injured leg if instructed by your clinician
Place the crutches slightly ahead of you before stepping
Bear weight through your hands, not your armpits
Keep a slight bend in your elbows while holding the handgrips
Move the crutches forward together
Swing or step your injured leg forward as instructed
Step through with your uninjured leg

Use small steps on turns
Move carefully on stairs
Go up stairs with the good leg first
Bring the injured leg and crutches up together
Go down stairs with the crutches first
Bring the injured leg down before the good leg
Use a handrail if available and safe
Wear supportive, non-slip shoes
Keep crutch tips clean and in good condition
Avoid wet, uneven, or slippery surfaces when possible
Do not place weight under your armpits
Stop and rest if you feel pain, numbness, or dizziness
Follow your healthcare provider’s weight-bearing instructions
