Set the handgrips so your elbows bend slightly when you hold them

Keep your weight on your hands, not on your armpits

Stand upright with the crutches slightly in front of and to the side of your feet

Move both crutches forward together

Step through with the injured leg if allowed, or keep it off the ground if instructed

Follow with the uninjured leg

Keep your steps small and controlled

Use handrails on stairs when available

Go up stairs with the good leg first

Go down stairs with the crutches and injured leg first

Wear non-slip shoes

Check that the crutch tips are secure and not worn

Keep pathways clear of obstacles and loose rugs

Avoid leaning your body weight into the armpits

Rest if your hands, wrists, or shoulders become sore
