Adjust the crutches so the top pads sit about 1 to 2 inches below your armpits
Set the handgrips so your elbows bend slightly when you hold them
Keep your weight on your hands, not on your armpits
Stand upright with the crutches slightly in front of and to the side of your feet
Move both crutches forward together
Step through with the injured leg if allowed, or keep it off the ground if instructed
Follow with the uninjured leg
Keep your steps small and controlled
Use handrails on stairs when available
Go up stairs with the good leg first
Go down stairs with the crutches and injured leg first
Wear non-slip shoes
Check that the crutch tips are secure and not worn
Keep pathways clear of obstacles and loose rugs
Avoid leaning your body weight into the armpits
Rest if your hands, wrists, or shoulders become sore
