Hold the cane on the side opposite your injured or weaker leg
Stand upright with your shoulders relaxed
Keep the cane tip on the ground before you step
Move the cane and your injured or weaker leg forward at the same time
Step through with your stronger leg
Keep your steps short and steady
Place the cane about 6 to 10 inches ahead of you
Make sure the cane tip has good traction
Look ahead, not down at your feet
Keep your weight evenly balanced
Use the hand grip firmly but not tightly
Move slowly on stairs and uneven surfaces
Use the handrail when available
Go up stairs with the stronger leg first
Go down stairs with the cane and weaker leg first
Avoid carrying heavy items while walking
Wear supportive, non-slip shoes
Check that the cane is set to the correct height
Stop and rest if you feel unsteady or tired
