How to Work Out Terminal Velocity?

Identify the forces acting on the object: weight downward and drag upward

Set the net force to zero at terminal velocity

Write the balance equation: weight = drag

Use the weight formula: (W = mg)

Use the drag formula appropriate to the situation

For linear drag: (mg = kv)

For quadratic drag: (mg = tfrac{1}{2} rho C_d A v^2)

Solve the equation for (v)

For linear drag: (v_t = tfrac{mg}{k})

For quadratic drag: (v_t = sqrt{tfrac{2mg}{rho C_d A}})

Substitute the known values

Check that the units are consistent

Report the terminal velocity in m/s
