How to Insert Intravenous Line?

Perform hand hygiene and gather supplies

Verify patient identity and explain the procedure briefly

Check for allergies and assess the appropriate vein

Apply gloves and position the patient comfortably

Apply a tourniquet above the intended insertion site

Clean the site with antiseptic and allow it to dry

Stabilize the vein and insert the catheter bevel up at a shallow angle

Advance until blood return is seen

Lower the angle and advance the catheter into the vein

Release the tourniquet

Remove the needle while keeping the catheter in place

Connect the IV tubing or cap the catheter

Secure the catheter with dressing and tape

Flush the line if appropriate and check for patency

Dispose of sharps properly

Monitor the site for complications and document the procedure
