Place 1/4 cup popcorn kernels in a microwave-safe bowl or paper bag
Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil if desired
Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid or plate, leaving a small vent
Microwave on high for 2 to 4 minutes
Listen for the popping to slow to 2 to 3 seconds between pops
Stop the microwave when the popping slows
Carefully remove the container using oven mitts
Season the popcorn as desired
Serve immediately
