Discharge the capacitor completely
Set the multimeter to capacitance mode
Remove the capacitor from the circuit if possible
Connect the red probe to the positive terminal
Connect the black probe to the negative terminal
Read the capacitance value on the display
Compare the reading with the capacitor’s rated value
Check for a stable reading within tolerance
If the meter has no capacitance mode, set it to resistance mode
Touch the probes to the capacitor terminals
Observe a brief low resistance that rises toward infinity
Reverse the probes and repeat the test
Replace the capacitor if the reading is open, shorted, or far from rated value
