How to Test Ignition Coils With a Multimeter?

Turn off the engine and remove the ignition coil connector

Set the multimeter to ohms for resistance testing

Measure primary resistance across the coil’s primary terminals

Compare the reading to the manufacturer’s specification

Measure secondary resistance between the coil output terminal and the primary terminal specified by the manufacturer

Compare the reading to the manufacturer’s specification

Check for continuity between the coil terminals and ground if required by the coil design

Inspect for open circuit readings, short circuit readings, or readings outside specification

Repeat the test for each ignition coil

Replace any coil that fails the resistance test
