Check local codes, permits, and fire restrictions
Choose a level, open location away from structures, trees, and overhangs
Mark the fire pit size and shape
Dig out the area to the desired depth
Compact the base soil
Add a layer of gravel for drainage
Level the gravel base
Place the first ring of fire-rated stones or pavers
Check that the ring is level
Stack additional rings with staggered joints
Use fire-rated adhesive if appropriate for the materials
Keep the inner surface smooth and stable
Leave drainage gaps if required by the design
Build the pit to the desired height
Install a metal fire ring if using one
Fill any exterior gaps with gravel or soil
Clear away loose debris from the area
Place a nonflammable surface around the pit if needed
Test the structure for stability before use
Use only dry, approved fuel when lighting a fire
Keep water, sand, or an extinguisher nearby
