Wash the area with soap and warm water
Soak the finger in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Dry the finger thoroughly after soaking
Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover with a clean bandage
Keep the area clean and dry between soaks
Do not cut, bite, or pick at the hangnail
Do not squeeze or pop any pus
Use pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen if needed
Seek medical care if redness spreads, swelling worsens, pus increases, severe pain develops, fever occurs, or there is no improvement in 2 to 3 days
Seek urgent care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
