How to Build a Cinder Block Retaining Wall?

Check local building codes and permit requirements

Call utility locating services before digging

Mark the wall layout with stakes and string

Measure the wall length, height, and setback

Choose suitable cinder blocks or concrete retaining wall blocks

Gather gravel, crushed stone, landscape fabric, drainage pipe, and mortar if needed

Excavate a trench below frost depth if required

Dig the trench wide enough for the base and drainage

Compact the subgrade thoroughly

Add a layer of crushed stone or gravel for the base

Level and compact the base material

Set the first course of blocks on the base

Check each block for level and alignment

Adjust blocks as needed before continuing

Stagger joints on each successive course

Use construction adhesive or mortar if required by the block system

Install drainage pipe behind the first course

Wrap the drainage pipe in filter fabric if needed

Backfill with clean gravel behind the wall

Place landscape fabric between soil and gravel

Compact backfill in layers as you build

Add geogrid reinforcement if the wall height requires it

Keep the wall slightly stepped back if the design calls for it

Cap the top course with cap blocks or coping stones

Secure caps with adhesive

Grade the soil behind the wall to direct water away

Finish with topsoil and landscaping as desired

Inspect the wall for level, drainage, and stability
