How to Check Ignition Coils with a Multimeter?

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative terminal

Locate the ignition coil and disconnect its electrical connector

Remove the coil if needed for easier access

Set the multimeter to ohms for resistance testing

Measure primary resistance between the coil’s positive and negative terminals

Compare the reading with the manufacturer’s specification

Measure secondary resistance between the coil output terminal and the positive or negative terminal as specified by the coil type

Compare the secondary resistance reading with the manufacturer’s specification

Check for continuity between the coil terminals and ground if required by the service manual

Inspect for open circuit readings, short circuit readings, or readings far outside specification

Reconnect the coil and set the multimeter to DC volts

Turn the ignition to the ON position

Check for battery voltage at the coil power terminal

Check the trigger signal at the coil control terminal while cranking the engine

Replace the coil if resistance, voltage, or trigger signal readings are incorrect

Reinstall all connectors and reconnect the battery after testing
