Wash your hands
Check the medication label, dose, and expiration date
Gather the vial, syringe, and needle
Remove the vial cap if present
Clean the vial stopper with an alcohol swab and let it dry
Pull air into the syringe equal to the prescribed dose
Remove the needle cap
Insert the needle into the vial stopper
Push the air into the vial
Turn the vial and syringe upside down
Keep the needle tip in the liquid
Pull back the plunger to draw up the prescribed dose
Tap the syringe to move air bubbles to the top
Push air bubbles back into the vial if needed and redraw the dose
Check the dose at eye level
Remove the needle from the vial
Replace the needle cap carefully
Use the syringe as directed or dispose of it properly if single-use
