Keep the scab clean with mild soap and water
Pat it dry gently
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly
Cover with a non-stick bandage if it may rub or get dirty
Change the bandage daily or when wet or dirty
Do not pick, scratch, or peel the scab
Avoid hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, and harsh antiseptics
Use a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes if the area is irritated
Keep the area moisturized to support healing
Protect it from sun exposure with clothing or sunscreen after it closes
Eat enough protein, vitamins, and minerals to support skin repair
Drink enough water
Get medical care if there is increasing redness, swelling, pus, fever, or worsening pain
