Keep the dog calm and still
Apply direct pressure with clean gauze or a cloth for 5 to 10 minutes
If blood soaks through, add more gauze without removing the first layer
Elevate the paw if possible
Rinse the claw gently with clean water or saline if debris is present
Use styptic powder, styptic pencil, or cornstarch on the bleeding tip
Hold pressure again after applying the clotting agent
Wrap the paw lightly with a clean bandage if needed
Keep the bandage snug, not tight
Prevent licking or chewing with an e-collar if necessary
Limit running, jumping, and rough activity until bleeding stops
Check the claw regularly for renewed bleeding
Contact a veterinarian if bleeding does not stop after 10 to 15 minutes of pressure
Contact a veterinarian if the claw is torn, broken, or hanging loose
Contact a veterinarian if the dog is in severe pain, limping badly, or the paw is swollen
Contact a veterinarian if the bleeding is heavy or the dog has a bleeding disorder
Seek emergency care if the dog becomes weak, pale, or lethargic
