How to Treat Broken Toe?

Rest the toe and avoid putting weight on it

Ice the toe for 15 to 20 minutes at a time every few hours

Elevate the foot above heart level when possible

Buddy tape the broken toe to the neighboring toe if it is not crooked or badly deformed

Place gauze or padding between the toes before taping

Wear a stiff-soled shoe or walking boot

Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and if safe for you

Keep the toe clean and dry if there is any skin break

Do not try to force the toe back into place

Seek urgent medical care if the toe is bent, severely swollen, numb, blue, open, or if you cannot walk

See a doctor if pain is severe, the nail is badly injured, or symptoms do not improve in a few days

Follow up for an X-ray if a fracture is suspected

Watch for signs of infection if the skin is broken

Avoid sports and high-impact activity until healed
