Drink small sips of water, oral rehydration solution, or clear broth
Rest and avoid strenuous activity
Eat bland foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, crackers, or plain potatoes
Avoid greasy, spicy, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, and very sugary foods
Try a heating pad or warm compress on the abdomen
Take over-the-counter loperamide only if appropriate and not for bloody diarrhea or fever
Take over-the-counter bismuth subsalicylate if appropriate and not allergic to aspirin
Avoid solid food for a short time if symptoms are severe, then restart with bland foods
Wash hands often to prevent spreading infection
Seek medical care if there is blood in the stool, severe pain, high fever, signs of dehydration, or symptoms lasting more than 2 to 3 days
