Open the ratchet fully until it lies flat
Feed the loose end of the strap up through the bottom slot of the ratchet spool
Pull the strap through until it is snug
Make sure the strap lies flat and is not twisted
Pull out any slack by hand
Pump the ratchet handle to tighten the strap
Close the ratchet handle completely to lock it
Check that the strap is secure before use
