Wear gloves
Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool
Part the fur to expose the tick
Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
Pull upward with steady, even pressure
Do not twist, crush, or jerk the tick
Check that the entire tick is removed
Clean the bite area with soap and water
Disinfect the area with pet-safe antiseptic
Place the tick in alcohol or seal it in a bag if you want to save it
Wash your hands after removal
Monitor your dog for redness, swelling, lethargy, fever, or loss of appetite
Contact a veterinarian if the tick is deeply attached, the mouthparts remain, or your dog seems ill
Use a veterinarian-recommended tick prevention product to help prevent future ticks
