Put on gloves
Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool
Part the fur and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
Pull straight out with steady, even pressure
Do not twist, squeeze, or crush the tick
Check that the mouthparts are removed
Clean the bite area with antiseptic or soap and water
Dispose of the tick by sealing it in a bag or container
Wash your hands after removal
Monitor the dog for redness, swelling, lethargy, or illness
Contact a veterinarian if the tick is deeply attached, the area becomes infected, or your dog seems unwell
