Wait until all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed
Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil
Loosen the soil to a depth of about 12 inches
Mix in compost or aged manure if needed
Dig a hole about 4 to 6 inches deep
Place the tuber horizontally in the hole with the eye facing up
Space tubers about 12 to 24 inches apart
Cover the tuber with soil
Do not water heavily until sprouts appear
Water lightly after planting if the soil is very dry
Insert a stake at planting time for tall varieties
Mulch lightly after shoots emerge
Keep the soil evenly moist, not soggy
Pinch back the growing tips when plants are established for bushier growth
