Travel to high-latitude locations near the Arctic Circle
Go during aurora season, usually late fall through early spring
Choose a dark, clear night with little or no moonlight
Check aurora forecasts and geomagnetic activity indexes
Get away from city lights and light pollution
Stay outside for several hours after dark
Look toward the northern horizon in the Northern Hemisphere
Be patient, as auroras can appear and disappear quickly
Dress warmly and prepare for cold weather
Use a camera with long exposure if you want to capture faint auroras
