Find the Big Dipper
Locate the two outer stars of the Dipper’s bowl
Draw an imaginary line from the lower outer star to the upper outer star
Extend that line about five times the distance between the two stars
The bright star you reach is Polaris, the North Star
Use the Little Dipper’s handle if it is visible
Look for the North Star at the end of the Little Dipper’s handle
Face Polaris to identify north
Use a compass or a star map if the sky is unclear
