Choose a cool season with temperatures between 50°F and 70°F
Select a location with full sun to partial shade
Use well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter
Prepare the soil by loosening it and mixing in compost
Sow seeds directly in the garden about 1/2 inch deep
Space seeds 1 to 2 inches apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart
Keep the soil consistently moist until seeds germinate
Thin seedlings to 3 to 6 inches apart once they are established
Water regularly to prevent the soil from drying out
Apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds
Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer if needed
Harvest outer leaves when they are large enough to eat
Pick the entire plant when it reaches full size if desired
Harvest before plants bolt and become bitter
Replant every few weeks for a continuous harvest
