Heat 2 tablespoons of oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat
Add 1 sliced onion and cook until softened
Add 1 chopped head of cabbage
Season with salt and black pepper
Stir well to coat the cabbage
Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and lightly browned
Add garlic, if desired, during the last 1 to 2 minutes
Add cooked bacon or sausage, if desired
Taste and adjust seasoning
Serve hot
