Use the correct key
Insert the key fully into the lock
Turn the key in the direction that unlocks the door
If it is a knob lock, twist the knob after unlocking
If it is a deadbolt, turn the thumbturn or key until the bolt retracts
If it is a keypad lock, enter the correct code and press unlock
If it is a smart lock, use the app, code, card, or authorized device
If it is stuck, gently wiggle the key while turning
If the lock is frozen or jammed, use an appropriate lock lubricant
If you are locked out, contact the property owner, building manager, or a licensed locksmith
