Choose untreated exterior-grade wood such as cedar, pine, or plywood
Cut the back panel, front panel, side pieces, roof, and bottom landing area
Make the interior rough or add horizontal grooves for bats to grip
Keep the interior chamber narrow, about 3/4 inch to 1 inch deep
Build a single-chamber or multi-chamber box with tight seams
Leave the bottom open or add a landing pad with a rough surface
Assemble with exterior screws and waterproof wood glue
Seal all exterior joints to prevent drafts
Paint the outside with dark, non-toxic exterior paint
Leave the inside unpainted
Mount the house at least 12 to 20 feet high
Place it on a pole, building, or post in a sunny location
Face it toward south or southeast if possible
Keep it away from bright lights and heavy tree cover
Ensure a clear flight path below the house
Install it near a water source if possible
Check that the house is secure and protected from predators
Clean and inspect it once a year when bats are not using it
Avoid disturbing bats during active seasons
