Gather dog nail clippers or a grinder, styptic powder, and treats
Hold the paw firmly but gently
Look for the nail’s curved shape and cut only a tiny amount at a time
On black nails, trim very small slices from the tip
Stop when you see a gray or chalky center, or a small black dot in the middle
Avoid cutting past that point
If using a grinder, file slowly in short touches
Reward the dog after each nail
If you hit the quick, apply styptic powder and apply pressure
Trim a little at a time on a regular schedule
Ask a groomer or vet to show you the first time if needed
