Measure the length and width of the area in feet
Multiply length × width to get square footage (for a rectangle or square)
For a room with multiple rectangles: split the area into sections, calculate each section’s square footage, then add them together
For an L-shape or irregular shape: break it into rectangles (or triangles) and sum the results
For a triangle: multiply base × height, then divide by 2
For a circle: multiply π × radius² (use radius = diameter ÷ 2)
For an oval: use π × (semi-major axis) × (semi-minor axis)
For a trapezoid: multiply (base1 + base2) × height, then divide by 2
If dimensions are in inches: convert to feet by dividing inches by 12, then calculate
If dimensions are in yards: convert to feet by multiplying yards by 3, then calculate
If you have a total area in square feet already, no further calculation is needed
Round square footage to the nearest whole number if estimating, or keep decimals for precision
