See a clinician promptly for testing and diagnosis
Start prescribed antibiotics as directed (finish the full course)
Rest and drink plenty of fluids
Use warm salt-water gargles several times daily
Use throat lozenges or hard candy as needed
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and fever (follow label directions)
Use a humidifier or take steamy showers to soothe the throat
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes that may irritate the throat
Replace or disinfect toothbrush after starting antibiotics and once you’re no longer contagious
Stay home from work/school until you’ve been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours and feel better
Avoid sharing utensils, cups, or lip products
Seek urgent care if you have trouble breathing, drooling, inability to swallow fluids, severe worsening pain, stiff neck, rash, or symptoms that rapidly worsen
Contact a clinician if symptoms don’t improve within 48–72 hours after starting antibiotics or if you suspect complications
