Soak the foot in warm water for 15–20 minutes
Gently dry the foot
Use sterile tweezers to lift the edge of the ingrown nail only if it’s not deeply embedded
Place a small piece of sterile cotton or dental floss under the lifted nail edge to keep it from digging in
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment to the irritated area
Cover with a clean, non-stick gauze pad
Wear loose, open-toe or wide-toe shoes
Keep the toe elevated when possible
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you can safely use it (follow label directions)
Re-soak and change the cotton/floss and dressing at least once daily until improved
Seek urgent care or a clinician immediately if there is spreading redness, worsening pain, pus, fever, red streaks, or diabetes/immunosuppression
