Soak the foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Add Epsom salt to the soak if desired
Keep the foot clean and dry between soaks
Gently lift the nail edge with clean dental floss or a small piece of cotton if it can be done without pain
Change the cotton or floss daily
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear
Avoid tight socks and tight shoes
Trim toenails straight across
Do not cut toenails too short
Avoid digging into the corners of the nail
Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover the toe with a clean bandage if needed
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if appropriate
Avoid repeated pressure or trauma to the toe
See a doctor if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, redness spreading, fever, or no improvement
See a doctor sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
Get medical treatment for recurring or severe ingrown toenails
Consider professional nail trimming or partial nail removal for persistent cases
